Borinquén is an ongoing project I’ve been developing for several years. It portrays my grandfather-a musician-playing his guitar. The title is inspired by the song “Lejos de Borinquén, “ which echoes his own upbringing. Like the story in the song, he was born in a small shack; his father was a farmer, and his mother a midwife. My grandfather often said, “ Through all the hardships we faced, my mother and father taught me to be proud to be Puerto Rican.” This piece honors that legacy of resilience, heritage, and identity.
